Carlos had just gotten his regular Saturday morning cut and was lounging in Amir’s office. “I’m thinking about catching the Woodrow Wilson–Moorestown football game later. You down?”

Before Amir could say anything, the phone on his desk rang. The last button on the bottom was flashing. The only people that had the private number was family.

“Hello? Wh-what—Mom—huh?”

Carlos saw Amir’s face flash alarm, then confusion, then anger. Carlos began to get scared that something really horrible had happened. Amir was the coolest cat that he knew, and he never let his emotions betray him. But whatever his mother was telling him, he was having a hard time keeping it together.

“All right, I’ll be right over.” Amir hung up and stared at the phone numbly.

Carlos waited for an explanation. When none came, he asked. “What’s wrong? Is everybody okay?”

Amir slowly turned his gaze from the phone to Carlos. “Apparently, my father has just lost his mind.” He sprang to his feet. “I gotta go to my parents’ house.” Amir opened his desk drawer and began fumbling through it. “Damn.” He abruptly stopped his search and closed the drawer. “I forgot that Kenya dropped me off this morning. My truck is in the shop.”

“My car is right outside,” Carlos offered.

Amir started for the door. “Let’s go.”
